Partnering with Advisors

Advisors are bound by the FERPA regulations, which means their conversations are private between the student and them. Parents and family members can partner with advisors by checking-in with their students to make sure they are prepared for their meetings, reminding them to schedule their appointments when required, and encouraging them to reach out with questions early and ask for help often. Some questions to get the conversation started are:

  • What questions or topics are you going to ask your advisor about?
  • How often are you required to meet with your advisor?
  • When was the last time you checked your degree audit

The University of Iowa has a two-tiered advising structure.  Most entering undergraduate students are assigned to a professional academic advisor in the Academic Advising Center (AAC); students who are admitted directly to the College of Business, Engineering, or Nursing are assigned to an academic advisor in that college.  The second tier is departmental or collegiate advising.  Students are re-assigned to a professional or faculty advisor in their major department, typically after they have earned 30 semester hours of credit.  Open Majors and students who plan to apply to a selective admission major will stay with their AAC advisor until they choose a major or are admitted to their major.  Academic Advising Center advisors also advise pre-professional students throughout their undergraduate career, as they prepare for their application to graduate or professional school.

Academic Advising Center (AAC)

The Academic Advising Center strives to help each student make a successful transition to the University, explore their interests and possibilities, develop an appropriate academic plan, and engage in educationally meaningful experiences. Their goal is to put each student in charge of his or her education by providing the tools and resources necessary to navigate the University and make informed decisions.
