Family Weekend 2024 was September 13-15

Family Weekend offers an array of opportunities to amp up your Hawkeye Pride and connect with your student's experience on campus. Below is the information we shared during the 2024 Family Weekend to give you an idea of what Family Weekend is!

Family Weekend Registration

Family Weekend 2024 registration will begin in June. Family Weekend 2024 is a flat $40 fee regardless of how many family members will be attending. Besides access to all of the Family Weekend events, the registration fee includes:

  • An exclusive Iowa Family Weekend gift
  • Three tickets to the Pancake Breakfast on Saturday morning
  • Early access to purchase discounted Football tickets on July 8th. Tickets for the football game are sold out at this time.

Iowa vs. Troy Football Tickets

Date and time: Saturday, September 14th, 2023, 3pm kickoff

Tickets for the football game vs. Troy during Family Weekend are officially sold out. Please use the University's official resale website, SeatGeek, to purchase tickets if you are interested in going to the game.

Iowa Field Hockey vs. New Hampshire

Friday, Sept. 13th, 2 PM *updated time!

Location: Grant Field (555 Prairie Meadow Dr., Iowa City, IA 52246)

Come cheer on the Iowa Field Hockey team as they play against the New Hampshire Wildcats! Last year, the Hawkeyes finished the year with a 13-6 overall record and had a NCAA Sweet 16 appearance to finish their season. First-Gen Family and Friends Friday Fun Fest

Welcome to the First-Gen Family and Friends Friday Fun Fest! First-gen students are students who do not have a parent or legal guardian who has completed a bachelor’s degree, and currently, almost 1 in 5 University of Iowa undergrads identify as first-gen. Being a first-gen student is an exciting accomplishment, and we’re thrilled to kick off Family Weekend with an event tailored just for you! Science Expo: Exciting Experiments and Demos

Renting Rumble: Test Your Renting IQ!

Student Legal Services lawyers will present on renting in Iowa City with topics including finding a rental unit, maintenance requests, and getting your security deposit back. Then they’ll test your skills with a game of Kahoot! for prizes and SLS swag.

Family Weekend Kick-Off!

Join us at Hubbard Park to kickoff Family Weekend with other Hawkeye families. There will be live music by local musician James Tutson and local food trucks available for those who want to purchase dinner. Guests will also have the chance to play yard games with Campus Safety, ask your questions to Iowa Fraternity and Sorority Life professionals, grab some Iowa Family swag from pop-up Hawk Shop, and meet University Counseling Services staff. You can also check-in during this time to grab your Family Weekend swag item. 

Local food trucks include TC Bonez, Smiley's Soup and Sandwiches, Keepin Up with the Jones's, and El Gringo Loco. Menus and trucks are subject to change.

Ban the Boring: Tom Kennedy

Looking to experience a student favorite event on campus? Then join us for the Family Weekend Pancake Breakfast. Students line up each finals week to experience the Pancake Man and his flipping skills, and now you can see what it is all about it as well!

Yoga in the Park

Northside Saturday Nights

UI Dance Marathon Runway of Hope

Join us for UIDM’s annual fundraising brunch to support pediatric oncology patients being treated at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital. During the brunch, we will have a Silent Auction and our Runway of Hope Kiddo Fashion Show where our incredible UI Dance Marathon kiddos, along with their siblings and University of Iowa student leaders, will walk the runway.

The University of Iowa Dance Marathon creates and sustains special projects to provide emotional and financial support and services for pediatric oncology and bone marrow transplant patients and their families treated at University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital.

$25 per person and you must pick up your tickets during check-in on Friday and Saturday. If you need to purchase additional tickets, please email ui-parents@uiowa.edu.

A Glimpse into Your Student’s Learning Experience: Supplemental Instruction (SI) at Iowa

Poe Exhibit: Father of Sci-Fi and Master of the Macabre

View Edgar Allan Poe’s works of early science fiction juxtaposed uncanny creatures on loan from the Natural History Museum. Engage in word search puzzles, mad libs, and other activities based on Poe’s most famous works. This event is free and open to all.

Campus Recreation Centers

Looking to utilize campus recreational facilities and equipment? Access passes can be purchased for $6 per person when completing your Family Weekend registration and will be picked up at check-in on Friday or Saturday. Pass can be used at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center, the Field House, and the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center.

Exploring Outdoors Iowa

Looking to escape downtown Iowa City and explore scenic Iowa? Then check out two exciting University locations located about 15 minutes outside of Iowa City. The Macbride Nature Recreation Area (MNRA) is a 485-acre natural area that includes 14 trails all along Coralville Lake and Lake Macbride State Park. MNRA is also home to the Iowa Raptor Project and we encourage you to visit for a self-guided tour to explore their preservation efforts and to say hello to their 17 unreleasable birds of prey. 

Performing Arts at Iowa

Although our fall programming is focused on Iowa athletics and student traditions, we also know that you may want to attend one of the many performances happening on campus during Family Weekend.   • UI Stanley Museum of Art Tour
    160 W Burlington St, Iowa City, IA 52242
    The University of Iowa Stanley Museum of Art welcomes families to discover and enjoy extraordinary works of art, explore new ideas, and cultivate new insights into history, culture, and the act of creation. Self-guided tour booklets and scavenger hunts are always available at the front desk; guided tours are also available when scheduled online (here) at least one month in advance. We hope you leave the Stanley with a sense of excitement and wonder, curious to learn more about art and culture. Open 10am-4:30pm Friday and Saturday, 12:00 pm-4:30pm Sunday
  • UI Museum of Natural History
    17 N Clinton St, Iowa City, IA 52242
    Explore the magical gallery spaces of a museum that has been part of the Hawkeye experience for more than 170 years. Journey through 500 million years of our state’s geological, cultural, and ecological history in Iowa Hall where you will meet our famous museum mascot, Rusty the Giant Sloth (#SelfieWithRusty), and find our gift shop. Next, make your way up to Bird and Mammal Halls to find the real hidden treasures including the Laysan Island Cyclorama and “the whale”. Be sure to follow the museums on IG to keep up with programming and special events for students and families @pentacrest.museums. Open 10am-5pm Friday and Saturday. Closed Sunday.
  • Old Capitol Museum
    17 N Clinton St, Iowa City, IA 52242
    The Golden Old Capitol is the heart of our beautiful campus in downtown Iowa City. The museum features history of our National Historic Landmark which served as Iowa's first state capitol from 1846-1857 and the University of Iowa's founding building. Be sure to visit the changing exhibits on the ground floor, too. A rite of passage for all Hawkeyes, a visit to the Old Capitol Museum is a must and a souvenir from our gift shop is a treat. Be sure to follow the museums on IG to keep up with programming and special events for students and families @pentacrest.museums. Open 10am-5pm Friday and Saturday. Closed Sunday.

Dining

For meals on your own, make sure to check out one of Iowa City’s vibrant restaurants, or you can check out one of our Market Places (Catlett, Burge, and Hillcrest) and IMU dining options. Registrants of Family Weekend can find a coupon in the program they received at check-in for lunch at one of our market places!

  • St. Paul's Lutheran Chapel - The Lutheran Curch - Missouri Synd

    Sunday services at 9:00 AM and 11:00AM. Following both masses, there will be a free pancake breakfast with a free-will donation that benefits their weekly "Wake Up Wednesday" Brunch for students.
