Data Dive with Mirra

  • The first step in academic success resources is to identify the academic behaviors that have the strongest relationship with positive academic outcomes (i.e. grades)
    • Top three academic behaviors that are correlated to GPA for 1st year students: go to class; do the readings before class; take good notes
    • But, as students progress into their major and class sizes may get a little smaller, it becomes even more important to also review notes before the next class and participate in class!
    • Talk with faculty: students who attend office hours in the first few weeks of the semester earn higher GPAs (3.04 vs. 2.94)
  • Let’s talk about Tutor Iowa (that’s tutor.uiowa.edu) to find all things academic support! There are over 20 campus help labs, all affiliated with a specific department or college. They can all be found here.
    • You can search by course (chemistry courses are the most widely searched for)
    • You can connect with private tutors (we had over 2,500 requests last year)
