Dear Parents and Family,

The University Counseling Services are hosting weekly Live Zoom Workshops for students to receive support and information on numerous subjects. Below is the newsletter they sent out describing their workshops.

Live Zoom Series Offered This Week
See below for a list of live Zoom workshops and support groups hosted by the University Counseling Service. These are opportunities for University of Iowa students regardless of their current location, and intended to provide support and information on a variety of topics. Visit the UCS website for more information about all of these programs and information about additional services available to students (link). 

Mondays: 
  • Let's Talk, Hawks! - Weekly from 3:30-4:30pm CDT
    • Hosted by Dawn Bates, PhD
    • Let's Talk, Hawks! is a drop-in consultation service that provides students with an opportunity to have an informal, confidential, anonymous conversation with a UCS therapist. Students can share mental health concerns, work on problem solving, learn about useful campus and community resources, or ask questions about counseling and UCS. Consultations are first come, first served; brief (up to 15 minutes); and anonymous. This is not a counseling or crisis service.

Tuesdays:
  • Soothe Your Anxiety – Tuesdays from 10:30-11:00am CDT
    • Hosted by Dawn Bates, PhD
    • Soothe Your Anxiety is for UI students who are looking to better understand anxiety and develop some tools to cope with the symptoms they may experience. Each workshop will feature information about anxiety and easy to learn coping skills. Whether you have experienced anxiety for a long time or are experiencing it for the first time in response to Covid-19, this workshop can help. The workshop meets twice each week and features different topics, designed to give students a quick option to learn anxiety management skills – attend them all or pick and choose.

Wednesdays:
  • Kind Mind: COVID-19 Series - – Wednesdays 1:00-2:00pm CDT
    • Hosted by Brittany Greenbaum, PhD
    • Join Dr. Brittany Greenbaum for weekly training in developing a kind mind to increase psychological wellness. Topics to be explored include resilience, compassion, and mindfulness with a focus on how they can help us improve our relationships and cope with stress, anxiety, and depression. 
    • The first 20 minutes of the workshop will include an overview of Kind Mind and the remaining time will be spent exploring new topics and practicing skills. It is recommended new attendees plan to attend the workshop at 1pm and those who have previously attended are welcome to join at 1pm if they want to review, or 1:20pm if they only want new content.

  • Mindfulness Matters - Weekly 1:30-2:30pm CDT
    • Hosted by Heidi Schmitt, LISW
    • Mindfulness is purposefully paying attention, non-judgmentally to the present moment. The practice of mindfulness can lead to an increased sense of balance, stress management and overall well-being in your life. Open to students and staff.

  • Success Not Excess - Weekly 4:00-5:00pm CDT
    • Hosted by Heidi Schmitt, LISW 
    • This group is designed to provide a safe and supportive space for students who are wanting to make or are considering changes in alcohol or other drug use. The group emphasizes success in academics, relationships, mental and physical health, and other meaningful goals through abstaining or reducing alcohol and other drug use. The group operates from a “no pressure” approach by encouraging the discussion of shared experiences and achieving success in college by removing the barriers created by substance use.

  • Living Through Loss - Weekly 3:30-4:30 CDT
    • Hosted by Dawn Bates, PhD
    • Loss and grief seem more prevalent now as our lives are changing in response to the Coronavirus and COVID-19. Sometimes it can be helpful to have support and guidance while navigating loss. Living Through Loss, an open support group, offers that support to University of Iowa students.

Fridays:
  • Solidarity - Weekly 1:00-2:00pm CDT
    • Hosted by Tianyi Xie, MS and Scott Liu, PhD
    • This is a safe space for Asian-identified International/American students at UIOWA to talk about concerns, share experiences, and stay connected with one another. Potential topics including racism and xenophobia, immigration issues, social distancing, and other adjustment difficulties relating to COVID-19.

  • Chronic Health Concerns Support Group - Weekly 11:00-12:00pm CDT

    • School, work, and simply managing everyday demands can feel overwhelming. It can be even more challenging when you have a chronic health condition.

  • ADHD Support Group - Weekly 1:00-2:00pm CDT
    • Hosted by Kyle Votroubek, LISW
    • Living with ADHD can affect every part of life and, at times, feel isolating. By coming to a support group, you will be able to share coping strategies and meet people with similar lived experience who are dealing with similar issues.  Come along to meet new people, learn strategies for success, expand coping skills, and share the challenges you’re facing regarding being a student at the University of Iowa.
